The Cooling Conundrum

In the heart of Brisbane, a group of enterprising friends faced a significant challenge during the early stages of their start-up. On the day of an important investor meeting, their office’s air conditioning system failed, plunging the room into an uncomfortable heat. With little time to spare and the stakes high, they knew they had to find a creative solution to maintain a professional atmosphere and keep everyone cool.

Understanding the urgency of the situation, they reached out to companies offering commercial air conditioning installation with the hope of finding a quick fix. However, aware that such installations could not be completed immediately, they also set about devising a temporary solution to ensure the meeting could proceed without a hitch.

The team sprang into action, implementing innovative cooling methods. They transformed the office using a combination of portable fans, ice-cold beverages, and makeshift window shades to block out the intense Brisbane sun. Their quick thinking and resourcefulness not only helped to lower the temperature but also impressed the investors with their problem-solving skills.

As the meeting went on, the atmosphere in the room became more comfortable, thanks in part to the team’s efforts and the cooling breeze that occasionally drifted through the open windows. The investors were not only captivated by the start-up’s presentation but were also touched by the team’s determination to overcome the heat obstacle.

Following the meeting, the start-up founders immediately contacted a service specialising in air conditioning installation for the inner Brisbane area to ensure their office would remain cool in the future. This experience taught them the importance of being prepared for any situation and solidified their bond as a team.

Their story became a testament to the spirit of innovation and teamwork, showing that even in the face of unexpected challenges, a cool head and a creative approach can turn a potentially disastrous situation into a winning opportunity. The start-up’s success story spread throughout Brisbane, inspiring other entrepreneurs to embrace challenges with creativity and resilience.

TV Boat Latches

The latest episode of Powerful Rings really blew me away with the power of a mountain exploding. It had awesome fight scenes, an explosive ending and some exciting character drama. I had my doubts about this show at first, but if they blow up a mountain every week and have some big battles here and there, I won’t have anything to complain about anymore.

Normally, I really enjoy a character-driven piece of media, but something about the character interactions in the first five weeks of Powerful Rings felt a bit off to me. Did we really need to see the elf character go and hang out with his dwarf friend, all as a ruse to discover whether the dwarves had found the secret power of the best boat latch in the world yet? I’m not sure what a boat catch is supposed to do to help the elves with the fact that they are slowly being drained of their power, but we’re supposed to just go along with it, I guess. I suspect that the dwarves are going to get so greedy over boat catches that they will dig too deep into the mountain to create more, eventually unleashing the power of a fiery demon. Now that’s something I want to see – not the build-up to it! Just show me the result!

I have noticed that there is a lot of boat talk in this show. If it was just for the island plot, then that would make sense, since boats are kind of their thing. If the bratty teenager wants to tank his apprenticeship making bait boards, I can totally buy that as part of this story. But when the elves are obsessed with finding these boat latches, I start to wonder if it’s all some sort of subliminal message to get me to buy snapper racks near Melbourne. Now, I wouldn’t have a huge problem with that if it were true, but call me old-fashioned if I’d rather they stick to the holy lore written by James Taken several decades ago. Oh well, as long as they keep the explosions coming, I will keep watching.

Heavy Decorative Plaster

‘I just don’t think they go,’ Evans’ wife sighed, looking at the two paintings side-by-side on the wall.

‘Are you sure?’ Evans asked her, standing next to her and crossing his arms. ‘Even just the one on the left?’

‘I’m not sure,’ she mused. ‘Could we try just you, on the left?’

The two contractors holding the gigantic paintings nodded dutifully, arms shaking with the strain. The one on the right took a few painful steps to the side, careful not to let the ridiculously expensive artwork topple over. His companion moved a few steps over, centring his painting on the wall.

‘Hmmm,’ Evans murmured, stroking his goatee. ‘Yes, that’s quite promising.’

‘You’re forgetting the morning light, dear,’ his wife said.

‘Quite right, poppet,’ he nodded. ‘It is rather difficult to tell, what with all of the wobbling that’s going on.’

‘Yes, why are you shaking so?’ she asked, directing her voice at the man holding the painting.

‘It’s–incredibly–heavy,’ he managed to grunt, almost passing out from the strain.

‘I suppose they’d prefer we employ some sort of decorative plaster panels for a home wall,’ Evans said sarcastically, and he and his wife roared with clearly-practiced laughter.

‘Unbelievable,’ she said, daintily dabbing a tear from her eye. ‘Truly, what will they think of next? Oh, go on, put it down, man,’ she waved her hand at the contractor, and he gratefully placed the painting down against the wall.

‘Thank you,’ he gasped, leaning against the mantlepiece for support.

‘Oh, why did you have to—’ Evans exclaimed, dropping his face in his hands. ‘Now we’ll need to re-plaster that entire wall!’

‘Sir?’ the contractor frowned. ‘Because I touched it?’

‘Walls aren’t meant to be touched,’ Evans’ wife screeched, even more angry than her husband. ‘I hope your insurance company has a good relationship with the best plasterer servicing the Melbourne area, or you’ll be in trouble!’

‘It’s a wall!’ the man said, flabbergasted. ‘What’s wrong with you people?’

You people?!’ she said, outraged. ‘How dare you bring race into this!’

‘Oh for crying out loud,’ the man rolled his eyes. ‘You know what, we quit. Enjoy having your stupid paintings on the floor.’

My Shoulder Again

Oh, wow, look at all the new subscribers I’m getting! No, Bradley is telling me you aren’t subscribers. You’re followers? He’s trying to explain the difference to me, but he’s not making too much sense.

Ah, to have the folly of youth again.

In any case, greetings to all my new, er… fans. Hello out there! I have another exciting story to add to what I’m affectionately calling my Brittle Bones Backlog. Clever, eh?

Bradley does not, in fact, agree that it’s clever. Bah, what does he know, he spends half of his time with a screen taped to his face waving magic wands around and pretending he’s in a different reality.

It’s a classic, this tale – I slipped over in the bath. I know, I know, I’m turning into a cliché of an elderly man. But, in fairness, my father did something similar in his old age, so it runs in the family.

Do you hear that, Bradley?!

I’ve got an appointment with a shoulder injury specialist near me. Melbourne has so many amazing doctors, but I’m glad I got an appointment with my regular guy. Oh, God, I have a regular shoulder guy now. I am turning into my father. And also maybe my mother?

It doesn’t feel good thinking about.

Luckily I know my way around a shoulder procedure these days, so I’m not too worried about any operation they might need to do. I’ve already experienced the benefits of shoulder arthroplasty surgery, so I’ll trust whatever they tell me after that. I might struggle to lob another baseball to my children but they’re:

  1. a) too old to catch baseballs,
  2. b) too busy playing virtual sports, and
  3. c) admittedly terrible at catch in the first place.

So, no great loss, is my point.

Hopefully this post finds everyone else doing well. I’ve missed you all and hope that everybody’s surgeries are healing nicely!

Until my next spill!*

George

Memories of Sailing

I remember that my dad and I used to sail when I was little.

He died when I was really young, but that memory — being out on the water, so far we could barely see land – that memory stuck with me.

‘What can you see?’ he’d asked me once, as I hung off the front of the boat, gaping at the water.

‘Nothing?’ I’d shrugged, childishly even for a child. He’d laughed though, and locked off the sail so he could join me.

‘Nothing?!’ he repeated, with mock shock. ‘How is that possible?’

‘There’s nothing out here!’ I’d said with a smile. ‘It’s just water.’

Just water?’ he said, mouth agape. ‘That doesn’t seem possible. What’s that?’ he pointed at the horizon.

‘Just the sun.’

Just the sun?!’ he repeated. ‘Do you have any idea how cool the sun is?’

‘Almost as cool as your vinyl boat wrap design?’

‘No, kiddo,’ he shook his head. ‘Nothing is that cool.’

‘How cool then?’ I frowned. He laughed.

‘Up there,’ he said pointing at the setting sun, ‘is a massive great ball of burning gas, so hot and so huge that it’s constantly reigniting itself.’

‘Woah,’ I gasped, staring up at it.

‘Been like that for billions and billions of years,’ he said, smiling as he looked at me. ‘And it’ll keep doing it for billions and billions more.’

‘What happens after that?’ I asked, breathlessly.

‘After that?’ he said. ‘After that it goes boom – and swallows up the Earth.’

‘Woah,’ I said again, quieter this time.

‘Don’t worry about us, though,’ my dad said with a grin. ‘We’ll be long gone, on huge spaceships. They’ll probably have cool designs on the side and everything.’

‘Like the cool designs for a sailboat print?’ I asked.

‘That’s my girl,’ he laughed, ruffling my hair. ‘But no, they’ll be much cooler than that.’

‘Like what?’

‘Oh, I don’t know,’ he said. ‘I have to assume there’ll be hot-rod flames on at least one of them.’

Hardware Shop Mystery

When Jack, Julie’s husband, returned home from the hardware store, she was less than impressed. She sat him down almost immediately, with his new tools still in hand and told him very plainly why he could no longer engage in such risky behaviour. She tried to make it as clear as possible that he is no longer living just for himself and that protecting himself should be his number one priority, for his child if for nothing else. Jack responded poorly, at best.

Throughout the entire conversation he remained adamant that the building supplies for sale in Cheltenham were worth risking his life for. He told Julie that with the baby on its way, he needed to make sure that a nursery was built with the highest quality products. He told her that he needed to be in control of the materials chosen, so that he would be able to sleep at night knowing his baby was as safe as possible. Julie understood that sentiment, but she was still fuming at the thought of the love of her life and the father of her unborn child engaging in such risky behaviour.

After their conversation, both Julie and Jack agreed to take some time to reflect on each other’s opinions. They love each other, there’s no doubt about that. Each one of them needs to understand the other’s perspective and they need to come to some sort of agreement. Jack will never give up his risky behaviour, but he may need to do less of it. Julie found herself wondering what made the hardware shop located near Cheltenham so special. Why did it have such better quality materials than other hardware shops? Why did her husband specifically need to go to that one? It was a mystery and one that she hoped to get to the bottom of very soon. With only one month before her baby is due, Julie set herself a mission to understand her husband’s appeal of the hardware store.

CCTV Installation Gift

I’ve been thinking more about what to get my friend as a housewarming gift. As I said in my last blog post, she just bought an apartment which is pretty much unheard of for people my age. She’s worked so hard to save up enough money and I am so proud of her for being able to do so. I couldn’t even imagine how hard it would be to get into the property market as a young woman and beat out all the other bidders. It’s a really hard thing to do and she did it! I am so impressed with her and proud of her.

I think I’ve changed my mind about getting her a TV wall mounting service, just because I don’t know if she’ll actually want her TV on the wall. Maybe she’ll want to buy a TV unit instead that matches her coffee table or something. So I think the safer option for a gift would be buying her a wifi extender booster so that she can access the internet from anywhere in her apartment. It would suck if the internet couldn’t reach her bedroom or living room or something like that. Especially because she’s going to be living alone. She needs to have the internet to keep her entertained and ensure she can contact people easily. Having a functional internet is an absolute necessity these days. A lot of people would even go so far as to say that having access to high-quality internet is a basic human right. I would agree with those people.

Or maybe I’ll pay for her to get a high quality residential CCTV installation. In the Melbourne CBD and surrounds it’s better to have CCTV cameras installed outside (and even inside) your home. I will feel safer knowing that she will be able to see any potential intruders when she’s safe at home. I would hate for her to open her door to a stranger.

Talking To The Specialist

I am so excited to get this shoulder surgery. I’ve experienced countless shoulder injuries over my time because of football and hardly remember a time when my shoulders didn’t hurt. People who haven’t experienced the pain and difficulty that comes with shoulder issues don’t understand the massive impact it can have on someone’s quality of life.

I try to hide my discomfort from my family and friends because I know my pain upsets them. I do a good job of hiding the majority of the pain I’m in, but every so often I let out an uncontrollable cry that makes it very obvious that I’m in need of a shoulder arthroscopy, at the very least. I say ‘at least’ because shoulder arthroscopies are one of the most minimally invasive shoulder surgeries that surgeons can perform.

In my initial consultation with my shoulder surgeon, she said that depending on what she finds during my shoulder arthroscopy, she may be able to perform my surgery then and there using that tool. She said that this would only be possible if I needed a rotator cuff repair, superior capsular reconstruction or something else. There was a decent list of things that my shoulder surgeon could fix with a shoulder arthroscopy. I struggled to make sense of the entire list, but I feel like I definitely understood the basics.

When I was listening to the surgeon speak, I couldn’t help but think about how glad I am not to be a shoulder injury specialist. Melbourne only has a select few and they are booked out for months on end. I sat there wondering whether or not they ever actually got a break, rather than taking in the vital information that I’d need to know to get ready for my shoulder surgery. I always do this when I feel overwhelmed with information. Even information that I actually want to receive!

Dragon Tattoo Blues

‘Hmmmm,’ my girlfriend Lauren frowned, making a very specific sound for when you don’t have anything nice to say.

‘Just tell me,’ I sighed. ‘I can take it.’

‘I don’t think you can.’

‘It’s that bad?’

‘It’s worse,’ she shook her head. ‘Who told you it would be a good idea to have a dragon tattooed across your entire back?’

‘Nobody, like, told me…’ I said, thinking back to the tattooist located near Brisbane who had explicitly told me it was a bad idea. ‘It was kind of a personal choice, I guess.’

‘Yikes,’ she shook her head. ‘Not a great idea. Did it hurt?’

‘Not really,’ I lied. ‘I mostly listened to a podcast. Then an audiobook. I think people really need to hear about this George J.J. Nelson guy, he’s actually a really good—’

‘Cut the bull,’ she laughed. ‘Did you cry?’

‘Like the world’s most upset baby.’

‘That makes sense,’ she nodded, looking at my back again. ‘Honestly, James, what were you thinking?’

‘I thought it would be cool,’ I whined. ‘Isn’t it cool?’

‘No. No it is not.’

‘Dammit. Oh well,’ I sighed. ‘I guess I can just find a tattoo shop that does cover up tattoos near me.’

‘I’m sorry?’ Lauren almost choked. ‘Run that past me again?’

‘I’ll just get a cover up tattoo,’ I repeated. ‘Why? What’s wrong with that?’

‘Nothing,’ she laughed. ‘If it’s a little flower on your wrist or a word that’s spelt wrong.’

‘But my huge dragon…’

‘Will be with you until the day you die, yes,’ she kept laughing, wiping a tear from her eye. ‘This is honestly priceless.’

‘Well,’ I said, a smirk stretching across my face. ‘I do think you’re forgetting something…’

‘What?’ she frowned. ‘What could I possibly be forgetting?’

I leaned in close so I could whisper in her ear.

I’m not the one who has to look at it every day.’
